You may already have a brand and you don’t even know it. If you built your blog without any thought going into your brand you may want to focus and re-brand your online business. A brand should be looked at every 3-5 years, not necessarily to re-brand, but to make necessary changes to keep it current and visually appealing.
To brand a business it requires some thought and most don’t know where to start. I am going to share the 5 easy steps you need to take. But first, let’s discuss what is a brand and why is it important?
A brand is your ID, it’s like a driver’s license and we all know if you leave home without it you may get a traffic ticket or worse yet…not get served happy hour in your favorite watering hole. Most people carry it around with them at all times.
Your brand should be simple and easy to remember and carry within you wherever you are in order to recite your intention.
Decide whether your brand is about you or your business. As a personal business coach my brand should say something about me. In my case, I chose a different path with my name being Melody Tune. I didn’t want my brand to be confused with music. Another key factor with an online business is how you are searched. In my situation my name would have been searched for other purposes, such as music.
Here are FIVE steps to knock out a solid brand
ONE – Create a mission statement which will sum up your brand’s intention
TWO – Define a theme which is your blog layout
THREE – Choose colors to set a mood
FOUR – Pick fonts and a voice (writing style) to set the tone
FIVE- Design a logo to symbolize your intention
The mission statement is your brand’s intention – What is your mission statement? Write out your statement in a few sentences and use keywords that you can use throughout your site. Keywords and tags are extremely important in a blog, that is how people find you. Make a point to incorporate a process to do keyword research to optimize your brand’s search.
It’s not common to see a company mission statement published. It is usually used as an internal document to motivate employees and give them an understanding of your company’s purpose. It’s also a great way to remind yourself of your intentions for starting a blog or business.
- Define in one to two sentences your purpose/intention for a blog/business
- Tell how it solves a problem
- Get Creative! Don’t use a traditional approach, be unique!
Define the theme which is your blog layout – This makes it simple to keep your brand consistent when you have a WordPress blog theme, the theme keeps your fonts and layout consistent.
When you start your blog you will choose a WordPress theme which defines your layout, color and font style at this time you want to focus on how you want your brand to be represented in color and text. To get more inspiration go to WordPress.org – begin by looking at the WordPress themes and get an idea of which layouts and color schemes align with your vision for your brand.
There are 3 points to consider when reviewing themes for proficiency and consistency.
- Choose themes labeled “responsive” in the description, which means these will resize automatically in any device, desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile.
- Choose themes with at least 25 good reviews and includes mostly 5 star ratings.
- The theme should show a recent update by its creator. The themes are independent from the WordPress platform, as is most everything else you plug into WordPress. It’s important these are managed and updated regularly for the security of your site.
The Colors give the blog a mood – Download the branding guide for free to get a link with examples of color schemes with the appropriate hex numbers that you will need to give to designers. For now you can plug these hex numbers into your blog to give your site a mood of color. Bright colors are cheery, grays and muted colors give a more serious and professional mood.
Fonts and voice sets the tone – It’s important to know that web fonts read better without a serif. If you have a font you use in print material you may want to separate your print brand from your web brand.
It’s important to define a persona to your writing style to incorporate into your brand as a writer and a storyteller. This helps you stay consistent in your writing style where fans can easily recognize your voice.
A logo sums up the intention – A logo is important this is your symbol that defines your brand. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, it can be simple. Think of the Nike® swoosh, that is a legendary brand.
A brand needs to be consistent in order to be remembered by your fans. The one symbol that identifies your business is your logo. If you are creating a personal brand and it focuses on your name, then your logo should have your name in it. This is one of the easiest ways to create a logo.
Do some research and get an idea what others are doing to symbolize their names. It can be as simple as placing your first name in all lower case placed above your last name in all caps.
The first impression of your brand is the ABOUT ME page
Next focus on the most visited page on your blog which is the “About Me” page. This will define what your site is about, branding is not all about the way it looks. What your site says and how it speaks to others, is also a part of your brand.
An online source to help you get creative with images and design for your brand is Canva.com. Sign up for a free account and learn how to design, import images, edit, re-size, add text overlays and much more.
If you need a logo and want a professional to do it for you… I highly recommend 99 Designs which is a crowd source design business. You will initiate a design contest where a crowd of designers have 7 days to submit their designs. You receive dozens of designs from different designers to choose from and you get exactly what you need to brand a successful business/blog.
Lastly, Be consistent and memorize your mission statement
Don’t get hung up on your brand to where it prevents you from launching your business. There are ways to develop a new brand without going live until it’s ready. I tested my blog out one year before I settled on a consistent look. I would change small things here and there, most of the time people don’t notice small changes.

The last few minutes of the podcast I help you focus on setting an intention for your future self.
You will write a letter to your future self. This is a powerful exercise that helps you focus and bring light to your purpose.
- Before you begin take a moment to completely clear your mind. Take about 5 minutes to sit in a comfortable and peaceful place. This may be outdoors or in a favorite room. Sit quietly and envision that you are already successful and have everything you need, then clear all thoughts from your mind and for a full 5 minutes.
- Once you have removed all thoughts from your mind you have allowed space for wisdom to enter and fill your mind with clarity.
- Write a letter to your future yourself as if you have already become successful and congratulate yourself on the hard work that you have done. Write without thinking about it when you finish read your letter to yourself and feel the pride and success. Put this letter away in a safe place because one day you are going to read it and realize you are capable of manifesting all your dreams with a simple thought.
